Cathay Pacific's baggage allowance depends on the fare class or cabin class of travel and its frequent flyer program membership status.

Cabin or Hand baggage allowance

Standard

Economy and Premium economy travelers are allowed to carry one piece of cabin baggage weighing no more than 7 kg and measuring 56, 36 and 23 cm. Business Class passengers are allowed 1 10 kg cabin bag of the same dimensions.

 

 

First Class passengers can take 1 cabin bag weighing 15 kg with the same dimensional restrictions.

 

 

In addition, they are also allowed to bring 1 additional item which is a laptop, small handbag, camera bag or briefcase.

 

 

Green Marcopolo members remain the same as the standard allowance.

 

 

Silver and Gold members traveling in economy, premium economy and business class are allowed 1 piece of 10 kg while first class travelers are allowed 1 piece of 15 kg.

 

 

Diamond members in all classes are allowed an allowance of 15 kg.

 

Please note that the combined weight of all cabin baggage (including duty free) cannot exceed the above mentioned limit.

 

 

For babies, there is provision to provide car safety seats or child restraint seats. Infants are charged for not occupying a seat. Parents or guardians can bring a maximum of 2 babies provided that one of them has reached 6 months and occupies a child safety seat and the other is pledged to the parent/guardian using a child restraint seat. Child safety seats must be brought by parents/guardians.

 

Certain oversized items are classified as Cabin Bulk Baggage (CBBG) and to bring them into the cabin, it is important to inform the carrier at least 3 days in advance of the date of travel. These items, on the other hand, cannot be blocked or prohibited from being carried. This can be musical items, religious idols, works of art, etc.

 

Check In Baggage

No baggage over 32 kg in weight and 203 cm in total dimensions will not be accepted without approval.

Excess Baggage Charges

This applies to tickets issued from 1 Feb 2018 for travel on or after 1 May 2018

The calculation of excess baggage charges depends on the Cathay Pacific flight zone.

In case of overweight baggage, the excess charge is USD 100 for Premium Economy travelers if the free allowance is more than 25 kg but less than 32 kg. It will be USD 100 for Economy travelers if the luggage is more than 23 kg and less than 32 kg. In the case of oversized baggage, USD 100 per piece is charged if the dimensions exceed 158 cm but less than 203 cm in all classes. If the baggage is more than 32 kg or dimensions 203 cm, the charge is 4 times the additional baggage rate each.

 

This bag should be up to 23 kg or 158 cm.

Overweight bag charge (23 kg to 32 kg): NZD 200 / HKD 1300

Large size charge (158 cm to 203 cm): NZD 200/HKD 1300 per piece.

For the determination of baggage allowance in cases where connecting flights of other airlines are involved, the Most Important Carriage rules will apply (w.e.f. 01 April 2015).

Additional charges apply for each overweight or oversized portion:

  • Overweight (Over 50 pounds/23 kg and up to 70 pounds/32 kg): $150
  • Oversized (Over 62 inches/158 cm and up to 80 inches/203 cm in total dimension): $200

Any baggage weighing more than 70 pounds (32 kg) or measuring more than 80 inches (203 cm) in total dimensions must be repacked into a divided unit within this limit. The total dimensions of your bag are the sum of its width, height and length. If your bag cannot be broken down, please contact your local reservation office before you fly and the airline will investigate if they can accommodate your items.

Cathay Pacific does not accept bags that exceed the limits stated above without prior approval.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Cathay Pacific allows passengers to prepay for baggage online or through their Contact Center for some flights.

Here's how you can prepay:

  • Log in to your account using the Manage Booking section on Cathay’s website
  • Calling Cathay’s Contact Centre at 1-888-875-0388

Cathay Pacific offers prepaid baggage discounts on select flights. To see if your flight is eligible, log into your booking or contact the Cathay Pacific Contact Center and take advantage of up to 10% discount on prepaid baggage up to 24 hours before departure.

Forbidden items in your hand luggage with Cathay Pacific

For security reasons, some items are not allowed in your hand luggage with Cathay Pacific. Indeed, if you do not want to lose your items, please follow the following rules.

First, for several years, you cannot travel with liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100ml in the airplane cabin. Furthermore, all containers must be in a zip-top plastic bag. All these containers should not exceed one liter.

Second, all dangerous objects such as sharp objects are not allowed on the plane (scissors, knives, razors). All explosive or flammable materials are prohibited in the aircraft (lighters, mines, fireworks, bullets...). Even lithium batteries are prohibited in hand luggage.

And sports equipment as blunt objects (golf clubs, poles, bats...) cannot be transported in your hand luggage.

Regarding food, it is generally accepted on the plane (sandwiches, cakes, sweets...). But be aware that some countries have strict import policies like Australia. In these countries, you cannot bring food, vegetables, fruits or wooden items to avoid diseases and ecosystem destruction. Because regulations change frequently, you must check the TSA and airline websites before taking your flight. In fact, security personnel can refuse access to the plane to anyone with prohibited objects in their hand luggage. So if you want to enjoy your trip, know all the hand luggage rules.

 

Forbidden objects in your checked luggage with Cathay Pacific

The list of prohibited items in your checked baggage is less strict than in your hand cathay pacific airlines baggage policy. Indeed, you will not have access to your checked baggage during the flight as it will be transported in the cargo compartment. It is possible to transport prohibited objects in your hand baggage, in your checked baggage. But for some of them, you need to have permission like a gun or ammunition. It should also be packed in a safe container.

Cathay Pacific Carry On Baggage Sizes and Weight Limitation and Fees

Bags exceeding the following weight and size limits will not be accepted unless prior approval has been obtained:

 

The maximum weight is 70lb/32kg, and the maximum dimensions (L + W + H) are 203cm/80in (on one-piece concept flights) Bags exceeding the maximum size limit must be separated and repacked at check-in. Baggage that exceeds your standard check-in allowance in size and weight, or exceeds your Cathay or one-stage world allowance, will require special handling and additional fees.

 

Cathay Pacific also allows additional small items on board to accompany your main bag. They state that these additional items cannot exceed the following dimensions: 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm).
