Athletes skate fast, colliding with one another with great force while sliding and managing the puck with finesse. What is Ice Hockey?

Ice hockey, aka hockey, is played with ice skates on an ice surface. Players use hockey sticks to push a flat hockey puck across the ice and into a goal. The team with the most goals after the given time wins the game.

The NHL (National Hockey League) is the world's largest league, and the league is generating annual revenues in the millions of dollars.

Aim of The Game

The purpose of the sport is to use a hockey stick to smack a little puck across the rink before hitting it into a goal. Each time the puck enters the goal, one point is awarded to that team. It is then passed around the players on the ice. The opposing team's job is to stop the other team from scoring. By the end of the game, the team with the most goals is named the victor. If it ends in a tie, extra time is given to the groups. And the first side to score a plan will be declared the winner.

Ice Hockey Equipment

Usually, only a few types of equipment are needed to play games. But ice hockey is different in this regard. Injuries are common because it is a full-contact sport with body checks permitted. Protective equipment is required and enforced in all competitive circumstances, along with custom ice hockey uniforms. An athlete must have PPE in order to stay safe and protected. These include:

• a helmet (cage worn if certain age);
• shoulder pads;
• elbow pads;
• mouthguard;
• protective gloves;
• heavily padded shorts (also known as hockey pants) or a girdle;

• shin pads;
• skates;
• and (optionally) a neck protector.

Goalkeepers wear some extra protective equipment such as a neck guard, chest/arm protector, blocker, catch glove, and leg pads.

Players in The Game

Each squad is limited to a maximum of 20 players. Only six of these 20 players may be on the ice at the same time. The rest will become substitutes. They may come and leave from the rink as needed. A goalkeeper and five outfielders are among the six starts. At the same time, each player is assigned a position. They are allowed to travel around the ice as they like. This does not apply to the goaltender. He must stay within his half and not cross the center red line.

The Rink

Ice hockey has evolved from a basic game on the ice of a pond to a complicated game. Now it plays on well-organized rinks, and these rinks must match the specified federations. Therefore, most hockey rinks around the world follow The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

The red centerline divides the rectangle ice with rounded sides in half. The rink is divided into three equal zones by two blue lines.

Gameplay

Each game consists of three 20-minute halves. And sometimes an overtime period in case of a tie. The game clock is paused during each stoppage in the game, and when the timer runs out in each period, the game will end immediately.

Moreover, a team can change the lines and have other individuals take the ice as the whistle blow. It is usually blown after a penalty, goal, icing call, or an offside call. Or sometimes when the referee considers it necessary. The most popular approach to change lines is on the fly when exhausted athletes skate to the bench while their rested teammates jump onto the ice and take their place. A normal shift lasts between 45 seconds and one minute.

Scoring

To score a goal, a player must hit the puck across the goal line. They can use any part of their body or stick to hit a goal. But the use of hands is prohibited. To be considered a goal, the entire puck must cross the line. The goal line incorporates a sensor in professional leagues such as the NHL. This sensor detects that the puck has ultimately passed the bar. At the same time, the umpires' decisions are considered in amateur leagues.

Basic Rules

Penalties
