What causes gynecomastia?

The causes of gynecomastia can be either hormonal or due to the ingestion of certain medications and drugs, especially steroids. With the rampant use of steroids in bodybuilding, gynecomastia is becoming increasingly prevalent.

Types of gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can be of two types:

Physiologic gynecomastia: It is caused by hormonal imbalances. It can be seen in three ages- newborns, boys around the age group of 10-12 years, and males over the age of 50. Physiologic gynecomastia can resolve on its own or with medications within 2 years. If however the condition is not resolved by medicines, it might require surgical correction at some point in life.

Non-physiologic gynecomastia: It is a more common type of gynecomastia. It can be caused by conditions like malnutrition, liver failure, kidney failure, intake of certain medicines, and anabolic steroids. It can be treated by surgery.

Ideal candidates for gynecomastia treatment

  • A person with excessive glandular tissues on the breast.

  • A person who suffers from enlarged nipple areola.

  • A person has loose or sagging skin in the chest area.

Treatment for male breast or gynecomastia

The treatment of gynecomastia essentially addresses fatty tissue deposition in the chest area and the second most important is the excision of the male breast gland which has been enlarged by the use of medications or due to hormonal changes. It is a daycare surgery which is performed under local anesthesia or in certain instances if the patient is very apprehensive then general anesthesia is used.

Post-op care

The patient is discharged on the same day and can return to his work schedule within 4-5 days. However, certain high-impact exercises like jogging, cycling, or running and weight training are to be completely avoided for a period of two months. This minimizes post-op complications like bruising and swelling and also helps the skin to contour better over the newly formed chest wall.

Can there be a recurrence?

The answer is no. This is why we emphasize the complete removal of the male breast tissue so that hormonal changes no longer cause its enlargement.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery results

Using safe techniques and with proper post-op precautions, there is minimal discomfort in this procedure and the results are very good. However, in cases where the breast tissue has been very large and the amount of fat removed is more the results might take up to six months to appear for the skin to contour properly and give the existing patient the flat shape he really wanted
