Humming can be a self-soothing behavior and is sometimes observed in children on the autism spectrum. While not exclusive to autism, repetitive humming may be a form of stimming—a self-regulatory behavior that helps manage sensory input or emotions. It can offer comfort, reduce anxiety, or serve as a coping mechanism during overstimulation. However, humming alone is not enough to diagnose autism. If it occurs alongside social, communication, or behavioral differences, it may be worth exploring further with a specialist.
