Public international law, often known as the Restatement of the Law, is the body of law developed as a result of interactions between nations. It focuses on nation-state behavior, including how they interact with other states and, to a lesser extent, how they interact with people, businesses, and other legal entities. There is no global institution that enforces treaties because public international law lacks a traditional enforcement mechanism. Instead, by abiding by treaties, adopting common law norms, and embracing broad legal concepts, nations submit themselves to international law. In general, nations adhere to the established norms of public international law out of respect for one another and the knowledge that violating any principle could result in punishment from other nations, including economic or even military consequences.
