Supported Independent Living - How to Get the Most Out of Your NDIS

Comments · 17 Views

One of the best things about receiving NDIS funding is that it can be used to help you move out of home and live a more independent lifestyle. This can include supports to assist you with things like cooking, cleaning and taking care of yourself.

If you’re looking for more information on how to get this support in your ndis supported independent living plan, we’ve put together this handy guide. It includes a lot of valuable tips and advice on how to make the most of this category, so that you can get the most out of it and achieve your goal to live independently!

The NDIS is a disability insurance scheme that provides financial assistance to people with disabilities. It’s designed to give participants the support they need to live their lives more independently and to control their choices more. This can be particularly important if you have a disability that causes you to struggle with everyday tasks like getting out of bed, cooking and even just dressing yourself.

This can be a really difficult thing to do, but it’s something that the NDIS makes possible through its funding categories, including Supported Independent Living (SIL). It can be difficult to understand what this category is all about, and how you can get it in your NDIS plan.

There are three different levels of SIL funding, depending on the level of support you need and how much independence you want to achieve. These include lower needs, standard needs and higher needs.

Low needs - This is the most basic level of SIL, providing regular supervision and assistance with living arrangements as well as some day to day tasks. This is not usually available 24 hours a day, but can be provided by support workers overnight if needed.

Standard needs - This is the middle level of SIL and provides 24-hour support, with overnight support and supervision of day to day activities as well as help with personal care, meals and managing frequent challenging behaviours. This level is often only required by those with high medical or complex behavioural disabilities.

Higher needs - This is the highest level of supported independent living available and includes continual active support with day and night activities. This is also the most expensive level of SIL, but it’s also a very rewarding experience for many participants.

Good Vibes works with a great team of support coordinators who can maximise your NDIS plan and connect you with informal and NDIS accredited supports to help you build your skills for living independently. Whether you need a little help or a lot, our support coordinators can find the right support for your needs and budget.

The best way to start gaining more understanding of SIL is to speak to our support coordinators about your goals and what kind of support you need. They’ll be able to help you with everything from applying for SIL funding through to finding the most suitable service providers to meet your needs.
