Cervical Discogenic Radiculopathy

Hi friends! Matt and Jordan coming to you from Aspen Ridge Physical Therapy. We want to talk to you about something that we see quite a bit, and it can be very debilitating. We call it cervical radiculopathy. This is something that affects your neck, but also one or both of your arms and hands. This injury can occur due to a variety of things, but it is often caused by some form of pain or problem with the nerves that come from the neck into the arms.

How do I get Cervical Radiculopathy?

  • Injury causing a bulged disc
  • Bone spurs or osteophytes in the neck
  • Poor posture
  • Having a preexisting condition (stroke, spinal cord injury, scoliosis, osteoporosis)
  • Narrowing of the neural foramina (joints in the vertebrae)
  • Tightness of cervical muscles

How do I know if I have Cervical Radiculopathy

  • Pain in neck and arms
  • Numbness, tingling, and/or weakness down the arms
  • Pain decreases with hand(s) placed on head

As physical therapists, we have tests that help us ensure that it is truly radiculopathy, and not other neurological disorders, like thoracic outlet syndrome or other peripheral neuropathies. The good news is that we can help treat your neck and arm pain. Depending on which level of the spine is affected, certain exercises can be given to help reduce any neurological tension that you have. This will help to reduce the pain in the arms. We will also identify any specific weakness you may have in the neck, shoulders, or arms. We can then provide you with a personalized exercise program to get you back to 100%

Here at Aspen Ridge Physical Therapy, we are prepared to guide you through a personalized treatment plan based on your body, your goals, and your needs.
